Flashback Friday – 1/22/10

Happy Friday All! After paying tribute to the late Teddy Pendergrass last week, I am back to throwing some random old school Hip Hop and R&B at you all this week. Today’s blog features old cuts from Cherrelle, Cece Peniston, Donell Jones, Joe Public and Yo-Yo. As I was looking up these videos and actually listening to the content, it actually made me sad about today’s music. If you’ve read my old blog, “Will Work For Good Music”, you’ll understand why. I mean, the beats from the past might not be as hot in some cases, but the lyrical content was about something at least! I digress. For example, Donell Jones’ song ‘Where I Wanna Be’ was real talk. Saying he’d rather leave the woman he was with because there were too many temptations facing him, but instead of cheating, he broke up with her. Even though it hurt her and him, he still ended up coming back. after he “sowed his royal oats”, lol.  How many folks do you know who have been in that situation? (BTW-I still believe that Mr. Jones is very underrated…where are all my Donell fans at?! )And Joe Public’s song talking about living and learning. Nobody does that anymore. They make mistakes…..and then make them again for whatever reason. No learning whatsoever. Smh. Then we have Yo-Yo telling dudes they can’t play with her “yo-yo”. I think y’all are smart enough to know what she’s talking about. This was like a the ladies anthem when it came out. Tellin the fellas at the clubs and parties that if you touch my “yo-yo” without consent, I’m stompin you out!  Haha. Anyway, please enjoy these old school tunes and take a second to vote, suggest and comment on them. Have a blessed weekend! 🙂

Flashback Friday – 1/15/10 – Teddy Pendergrass Tribute (1950-2010)

Teddy Pendergrass

March 29, 1950 – January 13, 2010

Happy Friday All! The music world lost a legend this past Wednesday, as we learned of the death of  R&B/Soul singer Teddy Pendergrass in Philadelphia, PA. He was 59 years old. Today’s blog is dedicated to Teddy. I stuck to only 5 songs but there could’ve been more since he has been a part of many hits from his gig as the lead singer with Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, to his lengthy stint as a solo artist. He may have been before my time, but I vividly recall my parents listening to him on their favorite radio station as I grew up, whether at home or in the car.  His infamous slow grooves like “Turn off The Lights”, “Come Go With Me” and “Close The Door” are the reason why most of you all are here, so you can thank  the late, great crooner for your very own existence, lol.  Please enjoy, suggest, comment and vote on your favorite Teddy P. song. Have a blessed weekend! 🙂

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – Teddy Pendergrass, the seductive American rhythm-and-blues singer who continued his recording career after he was paralyzed in a 1982 car accident, has died at the age of 59, media reports said on Thursday.

Pendergrass’s son, Teddy Pendergrass II, told the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper that his father died on Wednesday at a Philadelphia-area hospital. He had undergone colon cancer surgery eight months ago and his son said he had a difficult recovery.

Pendergrass began his career as a drummer but first rose to fame in the 1970s when he became lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which had hits such as “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and “I Miss You.”

Flashback Friday – 1/8/10 – Cornball Edition

Happy Friday All! Its the end of the first full week of the New Year. How are those resolutions coming along? You quit yet?!?! Lol, just kidding. Anyway, today’s Flashback Friday has a theme to it. I call it, the “Cornball Edition”. Why? Just watch the videos and listen to the songs and you tell me! The majority of the songs I post every Friday, at least in my opinion, are songs you can still rock to and proudly sing out loud or nod your head to without shame. Can’t say the same about the videos posted today, lol. I dare all you Fif Followers, to blast the songs I’m posting out of your car stereo or loudly through your headphones at the gym and see if you get any side eye looks, haha. Today’s blog features infamous throwbacks from Kriss Kross, MC Hammer, Milli Vanilli, Sir Mix A Lot and Vanilla Ice. Ok, I won’t lie–I bumped some Kriss Kross as a youngin’ and they were a hot little duo when they were out, but looking back now I still have to wonder why their mamas let them walk around with their clothes on backwards all the time. SMH. Show of hands for anyone out there who owned pair of those Hammer style parachute pants!! Those of you who still own them, I’m praying for you. I wanted to post the video “Girl You Know Its True” by Milli Vanilli, because its just terrible, but it didnt embed correctly, so here’s a warning for all you young males out there who are a part of the skinny jeans fad: be mindful of just how tight your pants are getting or else you could end up wearing spandex like pants like Milli Vanilli and nobody wants that. I can do this all day, but I will leave you all to watch the videos and take it back for a few minutes to ask yourself, “what were they thinking?”. Comment, suggest and vote for  the corniest video/song of the day! Have a blessed weekend! 🙂

Flashback Friday – 1/1/2010 – Songs From 2000-2009

Happy Friday and Happy New Year All! I could start this blog of by giving you all a bunch of cliche sayings and advice for heading into the new year, but ain’t nobody tryna hear alllllllll that anymore! Lol. I could’ve just gone back to posting a bunch of old school videos like normal, especially since I can now add songs that came out in 2000 since they’re now technically and officially 10 years old now, but I decided to just randomly post up a handful of songs that I like or love that were released in the last decade from the year 2000-2009.  Now, I realize that I could’ve dissected the last decade of music, really analyzed and picked 5 songs that maybe inspired or shaped Hip Hop and R&B but that would’ve taken darn near forever and I don’t have that much time, lol. So with that said– at random, today’s blog features songs from Alicia Keys, Beyonce, India Arie, Jay-Z and Kanye West. I don’t wanna hear any crap about Jay-Z being washed up and Kanye being a crazy, controversial bag of douche or how Alicia and Beyonce should take their R&B beef to a wrestling ring. So please just enjoy these randomly selected songs from a decade past and take a minute to vote, suggest and comment on the blog.  Have a blessed weekend and new year! 🙂
