Flashback Friday – 1/15/10 – Teddy Pendergrass Tribute (1950-2010)

Teddy Pendergrass

March 29, 1950 – January 13, 2010

Happy Friday All! The music world lost a legend this past Wednesday, as we learned of the death of  R&B/Soul singer Teddy Pendergrass in Philadelphia, PA. He was 59 years old. Today’s blog is dedicated to Teddy. I stuck to only 5 songs but there could’ve been more since he has been a part of many hits from his gig as the lead singer with Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, to his lengthy stint as a solo artist. He may have been before my time, but I vividly recall my parents listening to him on their favorite radio station as I grew up, whether at home or in the car.  His infamous slow grooves like “Turn off The Lights”, “Come Go With Me” and “Close The Door” are the reason why most of you all are here, so you can thank  the late, great crooner for your very own existence, lol.  Please enjoy, suggest, comment and vote on your favorite Teddy P. song. Have a blessed weekend! 🙂

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – Teddy Pendergrass, the seductive American rhythm-and-blues singer who continued his recording career after he was paralyzed in a 1982 car accident, has died at the age of 59, media reports said on Thursday.

Pendergrass’s son, Teddy Pendergrass II, told the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper that his father died on Wednesday at a Philadelphia-area hospital. He had undergone colon cancer surgery eight months ago and his son said he had a difficult recovery.

Pendergrass began his career as a drummer but first rose to fame in the 1970s when he became lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which had hits such as “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and “I Miss You.”

Flashback Friday – 6/26 – Remembering Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

DFF_FF_long

thriller-michael-jacksonHappy Friday All! Today’s edition of Flashback Friday will be dedicated to Michael Jackson. Its difficult to pick just 5 songs like I normally do, so I’ll just post the hit songs that Youtube will allow me to embed. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last 24+hours, you have heard the tragic news that the music world has lost one of its pioneers. An icon. A musical genius. A trendsetter. I am well aware of the fact that people will look at him and see nothing but the child molestation allegations and charges that crippled Michael’s life and career.  Some will see him as nothing but a pedophile. A weirdo. A freak. A misguided soul. No matter the words or phrases you choose to describe Michael Jackson the person, you must describe Michael Jackson the artist as a legendary entertainer who paved the way for many, many artists for decades. Today’s artists like Justin Timberlake, Usher, Ne-Yo and Chris Brown have tried to mimic his dance moves and style in their careers. The amount of songs that have sampled a Michael Jackson song is crazy long. Check it out the list, courtesy of Whosampled.com.

And theres are more. Like Jay-Z’s “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” and Kanye West’s “Good Life. Both tracks produced by Kanye,  sampling “I Want You Back and “P.Y.T. respectively. Same for Monica’s “All Eyez On Me”, sampling, yet again…. P.Y.T.  I never realized just how many of my favorite songs were samples from MJ’s tracks. Granted, he sampled other songs for his hits like P.Y.T, Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Someone Put Your Hand Out and 2 Bad, but he made those songs big. We’ll be hearing tributes all weekend long, but here are more of your favorite songs from the King of Pop, all in one spot.  Feel free to share anymore of your favorite Michael Jackson or Jackson 5 songs,  memories of MJ or just thoughts on his life and music as you see fit. And don’t forget to vote for your favorite song. RIP Mike.
